Daphne Arthur

About the Artist

Daphne Arthur combines painting, sculpture, drawing, and collage as well as unexpected materials in her work in an effort to break down archetypal aesthetic barriers while at the same time knocking down stereotypical perceptions on issues of race, gender, religion, and cultural identity.  She purposefully blends two dimensional forms with three dimensional figurative casts in her paintings, and predominately utilizes smoke in her drawings, to go out of her way to capture viewers’ attention on issues important to her.  Daphne exhibited at the 2011 Florence Biennale; she has participated in group shows at The City College of New York, The Nathan Cummings Foundation in New York, Arena 1 in Santa Monica, Land of Tomorrow in Louisville, and the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, which acquired one of her large-scale smoke drawings.
